Melendez Named Assistant Coach For Women's Rowing Team
October 04, 2019 | Women's Rowing - Open
PRINCETON, N.J. – The women's rowing team has announced the hiring of Krystal Melendez.
"I am excited to join Princeton for many reasons, but the two that stand out are the strong historic culture of the team and the experience of the coaching staff," said Melendez. "With committed and engaged young women, I am thrilled to see what we can make happen. I am also incredibly honored to work alongside both Lori Dauphiny and Bill Manning, two seasoned coaches in the sport from whom I hope to absorb as much as I can while adding a new eye."
"We are excited to welcome Krystal to our team," said Dauphiny. "She is a great addition to the staff and has a wealth of knowledge we are eager to utilize."
Melendez spent last season at Dartmouth as a volunteer before being hired as an assistant in the spring. She assisted with the coaching staff on training plans and practices. During that time, she also worked with the Upper Valley Rowing Foundation.
Prior to Dartmouth, Melendez spent nearly two years as an assistant and head novice coach with the crew team at Conestoga High School. Some of the highlights for Melendez's boats include a gold medal at the freshman girls' 4x at the Philadelphia City Championship Regatta in 2017 along with silver medals at the freshman boys' 4X at the SRAA National Championship Regatta (2018), Jim Baker Women's High School 1x Varsity at Head of Schuylkill (2018) and the freshman girls' 4x at the SRAA National Championship Regatta (2017). She also helped three boats qualify for the 2017 Youth Nationals.
Other experience for the new Tigers' assistant involved Canterbury Crew and the GMS Rowing Center.
Melendez has a wealth of rowing experience as well as a four-year member of the Middlebury College club squad. She was a senior captain who was involved in website management, fundraising and transportation coordination for the program. She graduated from Middlebury with a degree in women and gender studies in 2015.
