October 05, 2019 | Women's Volleyball
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Cornell Big Red ended the Princeton Tigers' four-match winning streak with a 3-1 decision at Dillon Gym on Saturday night (26-24, 14-25, 28-26, 25-21).
In front by one (11-10) in the first set, the Tigers registered four straight points, making the Big Red call timeout. Cornell closed the gap to one, but Princeton kept the road team at bay as the score was squared away at 18-14. The Big Red rallied, tying the contest at 23-all before collecting three of the next four tallies to win 26-24.
Already with an early set two advantage (5-3), the Tigers ripped off 13-of-18 to jump their lead to double-digits (18-8). A Cornell stoppage hardly slowed down Princeton as the home unit wrapped up a 25-14 victory to even the match at one set each.
Set four was tight affair as neither team led by more than two points. Facing a set point, a kill from Maggie O'Connell and an ace from Cameron Dames flipped the script and allowed the Tigers a chance to take the stanza. The set was tied at 25 and 26-all before consecutive kills from Joanna Chang gave Cornell a 28-26 win.
The Big Red held a two-point benefit (15-13) and extended their lead to four, 19-15, making Princeton use a timeout. After a kill from Oliva Schewe, Cornell picked up three straight tallies to expand the score to 22-16. The Tigers got within three, but a kill from Jada Stackhouse gave Cornell the set win and the match.
Jessie Harris was two assists shy of her career, nabbing 58 helpers. Four different Tigers had at least 10 kills with Clare Lenihan career-tying 18 leading the way.
Princeton dropped to 6-6 overall and 2-1 in the Ivy League while Cornell improved to 10-2 this season and 3-0 in the conference. Yale (3-0) and Cornell (3-0) sit at the top of the Ivy standings with Princeton right behind them. The Tigers take on Brown next Saturday (Oct. 12, 5 p.m.) before an ESPNU meeting with the Bulldogs the next day (Oct. 13, 1 p.m.).
