Princeton Takes A Thriller Over Seton Hall, 78-76

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – A three-pointer off the mark at the buzzer gave the Princeton Tigers a 78-76 victory over the Seton Hall Pirates on Friday evening at the Walsh Gymnasium.

A 14-6 push in the first quarter gave Seton Hall its largest advantage of the contest, 24-14, with under a minute remaining. The Tigers trailed by eight (24-16) after 10 minutes despite shooting 7-of-14 from the floor.

Seton Hall kept its distance in the second quarter and took a three-point jump into the break, 40-37. Princeton got within a bucket three times in the stanza, but couldn't budge any closer. Grace Stone paced the Tigers' offense with nine points.

Trailing by five (44-39) 90 seconds into the second half, Princeton used a 12-6 sprint to flip the game and take the lead 51-50, forcing a Seton Hall timeout.

The Pirates countered with 10 of the next 14 and jumped back ahead by five, 60-55, as the clock ticked near 1:30. A trey by McKenna Haire and bucket from Carlie Littlefield on consecutive possessions tied the game again at 60-all. Littlefield was then fouled beyond the three-point arc and sank all three attempts at the charity stripe to give the Tigers a 63-60 lead as the fourth frame got underway. Â

Head coach Carla Berube's squad locked in defensively to start the stanza, allowing just one basket over the first four minutes as it raced out to an 11-point lead, 74-63.

Following a three-pointer by Haire that put Princeton back up by double-digits, 77-67, as the frame was halfway through, Seton Hall made another run. A four-point play by Alexis Lewis highlighted the comeback, closing the gap to one, 77-76, with 43 seconds remaining.

After a turnover by Princeton, the Pirates missed a layup on their end, but got the offensive rebound and called timeout. The home squad was called for a travel after the stoppage and was forced to foul. Maggie Connolly hit one-of-two free throws before the three-pointer at the buzzer was off.

Littlefield led the Tigers with 19 points, adding six assists and six rebounds. She also drew a game-high seven fouls. Stone set a new career high with 16 points while Taylor Baur added 13 points and seven caroms. Julia Cunningham (10) gave Princeton four players in double figures. Ellie Mitchell contributed eight points and seven rebounds off the bench in the win.

Princeton improved to 3-0 on the season while Seton Hall suffered its first loss and now sits at 3-1. The Tigers welcome Florida Gulf Coast to Jadwin on Sunday. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
