Alarie Named To Two More National Watch Lists
November 07, 2019 | Women's Basketball
PRINCETON, N.J. – For the fourth time in less than a month, Bella Alarie has been honored as one of the best players in the country as she was named to the 2019-20 Preseason "Wade Watch" and Women's Citizen's Naismith Trophy Watch Lists.
The Wade Trophy — now in its 43nd year — is the oldest and most prestigious national player of the year award in college women's basketball. It is named in honor of the late, legendary Delta State University head coach Lily Margaret Wade, who won three consecutive national championships with the Lady Statesmen. First awarded in 1978 by the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD), now known as SHAPE America, the Wade Trophy has been presented to the WBCA NCAA Division I National Player of the Year since 2001.
Â
The "Wade Watch" list of candidates for the Wade Trophy is composed of players selected by the WBCA NCAA Division I Coaches' All-America Selection Committee. The committee will review the list in January to determine if additional players will be added based on their play during the first half of the 2019-20 season.
The midseason 30 Naismith Trophy list will be announced in early February, and then the competition will be narrowed down to 10 national semifinalists on March 3, 2020. Following those results, four finalists will be named on March 20, 2020, and the winner of the 2020 Citizen Naismith Trophy for Women's Player of the Year will be announced on April 4, 2020.
Â
Alarie was outstanding in her season debut vs. Rider on Tuesday, registering 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting, securing eight rebounds and two assists. The Tigers roared by the Broncs, 80-47, at Jadwin.
Â
The two-time Ivy Player of the Year was named a Women's Basketball Coaches' Association (WBCA) Honorable Mention All-American after the Tigers won their second straight Ivy League regular season and Tournament title last year. She is just the third Tiger to ever reach that milestone, but the first to do so after her junior campaign. The Bethesda, Md., native broke the team's single-season record for points per game (22.8) while her 210 field goals, 525 points, 65 blocks were the second most, her 408 field goal attempts were fourth highest and 10.6 rebounds were sixth. She became the first player since Ellen DeVoe in 1984-85 to average a double-double for an entire campaign.
Â
In the summer, Alarie helped her country earn a silver medal at the Pan American Games. She also led her team make the semifinals at the 3x3 stop in Italy, the quarterfinals in China and the semifinals at the national event in Las Vegas.
