Men's Tennis Team Comes Up Just Short at Old Dominion
February 01, 2019 | Men's Tennis
On its first of three matches in Virginia, the Princeton men's tennis team fell 4-3 at Old Dominion after the Tigers won the doubles point but the Monarchs came up with four of the first five singles matches off court.
"ODU played a very good match and I credit their players for fighting hard and defending their home courts," Princeton coach Billy Pate said. "I'm disappointed we didn't execute better. After winning the doubles point we just didn't get the momentum we needed early in the first sets of singles. From that point we were fighting a bit uphill, though we had plenty of chances to turn the momentum. We'll learn from this one and get ready for tomorrow. After today's result, we'll be ready to jump back into competition and be better."
Princeton won the doubles point thanks to victories on court two from Justin Barki and Karl Poling and on court three from Bill Duo and Payton Holden. ODU was able to pick up its singles wins, with both of its ITA-ranked players taking their matches on the top two courts while adding wins on courts four and six. Poling had a win on court three, as did Will Peters on court five.
Princeton will play a doubleheader at William & Mary Saturday, first against Norfolk State at 10 a.m. and then against the host Tribe at 3 p.m. Live results will be available here.
