Alarie One of 10 Candidates For McClain Award
February 14, 2019 | Women's Basketball
PRINCETON, N.J. – Bella Alarie is one of the last ten candidates for the Katrina McClain Power Forward of the Year award, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association announced today.
Â
Named after the two-time All-American and 1987 National Player of the Year, the annual award in its second year recognizes the top power forwards in women's NCAA Division I college basketball. Alarie made the watch list earlier this year as the list has now been whittled down to 10. The five finalists will be announced in early March with a winner to be selected by Katrina McClain and the selection committee in Mid-March. The presentation of the award will take place at the Women's Final Four in Tampa, Fla.
Â
Since returning from injury, Alarie has earned five Ivy League Player of the Week awards including this week after consecutive double-doubles vs. Yale and Brown. She is currently on a streak of five straight double-doubles and would lead the conference in scoring and rebounding if she qualified. The 2018 Ivy League Player of the Year has posted 23.7 points, 10.9 rebounds, 3.4 blocks and 3.4 assists per game. The last Princeton player to average a double-double was Ellen Devoe '86 during the 1984-85 season (14.1 pts, 10.5 rebounds).
Â
Alarie surpassed 1,000 career points vs. Yale, becoming the 25th player in program history to reach that milestone. The week prior against Columbia, she broke the Ivy League single-game record for points (45) and field goals (20), while setting the Princeton record for career blocks. She is just the second player in Princeton basketball history (Bill Bradley '65) to score 45 points in a game.
Â
Last season, Ruthy Hebard of Oregon was named the inaugural winner of the Katrina McClain Power Forward of the Year Award.
