Teves Sets Princeton Defenseman Record as Tigers Come Up One Short at No. 20 Union
February 16, 2019 | Men's Ice Hockey
Senior Josh Teves is now the all-time leader in assists scored by a defenseman in Princeton hockey history as he picked up his 68th career assist tonight in a 3-2 loss at No. 20 Union.
"It's an amazing accomplishment, considering the extensive history of this program," head coach Ron Fogarty said. "Josh is a tremendous leader on and off the ice, he's incredibly selfless and we couldn't be happier for him."
Teves picked up his 68th career assist on classmate Ryan Kuffner's goal at 4:47 of the second period. It was a beautiful give-and-go between the two as Kuffner grabbed his 18th goal of the season and continues his streak to remain second in the nation in goals per game.
Â
Union (15-9-6, 8-8-2) was able to even up the scoring with a goal from Liam Morgan at 11:48 with a second-chance effort after a neutral zone turnover by the Tigers.
Josh Kosack gave the Dutchmen the lead when he stripped a defenseman of the puck at the blue line and beat Ryan Ferland one-on-one at 9:24 of the third.
It took Princeton's power-play unit just nine seconds to convert on just its second power-play opportunity of the game late in the third. Senior Max Véronneau net his eighth goal of the season with Jackson Cressey and Kuffner assisting on the man-advantage with the Tigers tying things up at 16:18.
Â
It appeared as if the game was headed into overtime as a face off was taken with 25.8 seconds left with the Tigers top line on the ice. Union won the draw in the Princeton zone and threw a puck on net where a scramble ensued and Morgan was able to get his stick on it and put it in the back of the net for the game-winning goal with 14.6 seconds left.
Ferland made 23 saves in goal for Princeton as the Tigers went 1 for 2 on the power play.
Darion Hanson stopped 19 shots for Union, that came up 0 for 3 on the power play.
Princeton (7-16-2, 5-12-1) wraps up its regular-season home games next weekend at Hobey Baker Rink hosting No. 11 Clarkson and St. Lawrence.
