Harvard Defeats Princeton in Battle for ECAC Final Bid
February 16, 2019 | Men's Tennis
In a battle for a spot in the ECAC Championship final, third-seeded Harvard won the doubles point and picked up three more singles matches to defeat the Princeton men's tennis team 4-2 Saturday afternoon at Penn.
The second-seeded Tigers will face top-seeded Dartmouth in Sunday's noon third-place match back at Penn.
"Harvard played a bit more solid than us tonight," Princeton coach Billy Pate said. "We had our chances and didn't convert. The doubles point loomed large as we had a chance to serve it out. After that it felt like we were playing catch-up. We almost turned the corner getting back to a 2-3 deficit but Harvard did a good job of finishing. Our young guys will grow from this match and be better for it. We'll put it behind us and get ready for another great opportunity with Dartmouth."
Despite a win from Bill Duo and Payton Holden on court three, Harvard took the doubles point after a 6-4 win on court one and a tiebreak win on court two. Princeton was then able to win two of the first three singles matches off court when Will Peters on court six and Ryan Seggerman on court one won their matches, but Harvard wins on courts two and four sealed it.
Live results for Sunday's match will be available here.
