Senior Line Has Banner Day as Princeton Tops St. Lawrence, 5-3
February 23, 2019 | Men's Ice Hockey
Princeton's top scoring line of Ryan Kuffner-Alex Riche-Max Véronneau had seven points as the Tigers defeated St. Lawrence in what could most likely be the final home game of the season.
"When they play heavy on the puck, they are determined," Ron Fogarty said. "There's a lot of pressure on them to score, we don't have secondary scoring. So if they don't get one, they try to cheat a little bit. They've gotten back to the process of what makes them successful and I think they had a really good weekend. The Riche goal was very indicative of what that line can do when they are heavy on the puck."
"We all believe we are a good team, and we've been on the wrong side of couple games but I think we're playing better now," Véronneau said. We're more determined to win now and I hope we can keep up this momentum going next weekend and into playoffs."
It took just 38 seconds for that top line to get on the board as Véronneau took advantage of a rolling puck and put it past Emil Zetterquist with Riche and Derek Topatigh assisting with a strong Tiger forecheck.
Kuffner net his first of two at 10:04 of the first period as Princeton converted on its first power-play opportunity. Junior Jackson Cressey earned the primary assist and finished his night with a goal and two helpers. Véronneau had the secondary assist.
Keenan Suthers put the Saints on the board with a power-play goal at 1:48 as he picked up a stretch pass from Philip Alftberg took it in on a one-one-one.
Kuffner added his 20th goal of the season at 14:57 with a drive off a Cressey face-off win to expand the lead to 3-1.
It was good response by St. Lawrence to answer with a power-play goal to cut its deficit back to one less than two minutes later, a goal from Bo Hanson.
Cressey redirected a Matthew Thom shot for the game-winning goal at 18:10. After a lengthy review, as St. Lawrence burned its timeout, indicated a good goal on the ice.
Riche pushed Princeton ahead, 5-2, 36 seconds later with Kuffner and Mark Paolini assisting.
Zach Risteau had the only goal of the third period as the Saints got within two.
Sophomore Ryan Ferland made 21 saves in the winning effort for the Tigers. Zetterquist stopped 25 for the the Saints.
Princeton completes the regular season on the road next weekend, March 1-2, at Yale and Brown.
