Khosla, Young Claim Five Wins For Princeton, Which Splits HYP Weekend
February 03, 2019 | Men's Swimming and Diving
COMPLETE RESULTS
Freshmen aren't supposed to have the kind of poise and experience Raunak Khosla showed this past weekend at Blodgett Pool, but the Princeton newcomer showed once again why he is one of the swimmers to watch when the Ivy League Championships head to Providence at the end of the month. Khosla won three individual events during HYP weekend, which helped the Tigers claim a split in their regular season finale. Harvard clinched the Ivy League dual meet title with a 216-137 win over Princeton, but the Tigers dominated Yale in a 237-116 win.
Khosla wasn't the only Tiger to claim multiple wins during the weekend, as sophomore Colten Young swept the diving competition — one of two Princeton divers to excel over the weekend (more on this later).
Khosla's triple started Saturday night, as he won the 200 fly in 1:43.83, about 1.5 seconds faster than Harvard's top finisher. Minutes later, he was back in the water to win the 200 IM by nearly two seconds in a time of 1:45.86. His Sunday was highlighted by a 400 IM win in 3:46.70, which was also about two seconds faster than anybody in the field.
Senior co-captain Murphy McQuet got the individual events off to a solid start by taking second in the 200 free in 1:36.54, and junior Daniel Arris followed up with a runner-up finish in the 100 breast in 54.53. Freshman Brendan Firlie added a third-place finish in the mile (15:20.86), and the 400 medley relay of Cole Buese, Tyler Lin, Khosla and McQuet finished second in 3:13.20.
Princeton will now focus on training before heading to Providence for the 2019 Ivy League Championships, which begin Feb. 27.
Young picked up his first of two wins Saturday night in dominant fashion, as he claimed the 3-meter diving competition with 364.60 points, more than 40 ahead of anybody in the field. Sunday's event would be significantly closer, but Young pulled it off again; he won the 1-meter event with 335.05 points, 1.15 ahead of Yale's Christian DeVol.
One of Young's toughest competitors of the weekend would have been teammate Charlie Minns, but the Princeton junior gained strong international experience by competing in the British Diving Cup. Minns made the final of the 1M event and placed seventh overall, and he also competed in the 3-meter event, which was won by current Olympic silver medalist Jack Laughter.
Buese and McQuet teamed with Arris and Matt Harrington on Sunday to take second in the 200 medley relay in 1:28.26, and McQuet added another top-three finish when he took third in the 100 free in 43.94. Buese picked up his first win of the weekend when he touched first in the 200 back in 1:44.66, and Khosla added another strong effort when he took second in the 100 fly in 47.71. Firlie added a third-place finish in the 500 (4:24.17), and Derek Cox took second in the 200 breast in 1:59.18. The 400 free relay of Joshua Brown, Christian Feiler, Charles Leibson and McQuet closed the meet in 2:57.96.
