Cornell Claims 17th Straight Ivy Title With Home Win Over Princeton
February 09, 2019 | Wrestling
The 10th-ranked Cornell Big Red clinched its 17th straight Ivy League title Saturday afternoon with an impressive 34-7 home win over Princeton. The hosts grabbed the energy with a pin in the opening match and carried that to eight straight individual wins to open the match, which ended the Tigers' hopes for a 2019 Ivy League title.
Princeton did close the match with a pair of individual wins. Junior Matthew Kolodzik showed his ability to score late with a takedown in the final 20 seconds of his win over Jonathan Furnas. Freshman Quincy Monday had the match of the day for the Tigers, a match-closing 16-5 major decision at 157.
Cornell, coming off a 40-3 win over Penn Friday night, claimed the momentum in the first match. Princeton sophomore Dale Tiongson took the mat first at 165 and scored a quick takedown of Andrew Berreyesa, but the Big Red freshman caught Tiongson in a headlock late in the period and converted it into a fall with 33 seconds remaining in the period. Two Cornell ranked wrestlers followed with wins to open a 14-0 lead three matches into the dual.
The next three would clinch the win, and they included a pair of Top-20 wins for Cornell. Third-ranked Patrick Brucki led the majority of his match against #14 Ben Honis, but he gave up a late takedown to suffer his first loss of the season. Following a win at heavyweight, 11th-ranked Vitali Arujau caught #10 Patrick Glory in the second period and turned it into the second fall of the match for Cornell.
Kolodzik grabbed his 16th win of the season with his victory over Furnas, and Monday remained perfect in the Ivy League with a dominant performance over Adam Santoro. Monday scored the first takedown and turned Santoro for an early 6-0 lead. He didn't let up and grabbed a major decision with a 16-5 win.
Princeton returns to the mat Sunday when it faces Columbia Sunday at 2 pm on ESPN+.
