Fencers Get Set for NCAA Regional Saturday at Lafayette
March 05, 2019 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
The NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South regional will be held at Lafayette Saturday as the NCAA fencing postseason begins.
Competition will start at 9 a.m. for men's and women's foil and épée, 10 a.m. for women's saber and 11 a.m. for men's saber. Live results will be available here.
The NCAA regional counts for 60 percent of a fencer's NCAA selection résumé while regular-season performance counts for the other 40 percent. There are seven NCAA Championship spots allocated from the Mid-Atlantic/South region toward the 24 in each weapon. Teams can qualify a maximum 12 fencers, two per weapon, for the NCAA Championships, with each of those fencers competing in 23 bouts and each of those wins adding a point to the team's standing in pursuit of the combined men's/women's team title.
The Mid-Atlantic/South region includes Drew, Duke, FDU (women), Haverford, Johns Hopkins, Lafayette, NJIT, North Carolina, Penn, Penn State, Princeton, Stevens, Temple (women) and Wagner (women).
The qualifiers list for this year's NCAA finals will be announced Tuesday, March 12. The Tigers have two 2019 regional entrants with NCAA regional titles to their credit, with junior foil Samuel Barmann and senior épée Wesley Johnson winning in 2018.
