Hamza, Kwak Lead Fencers at NCAA Regional
March 09, 2019 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
Rookie Mohamed Hamza and sophomore Daniel Kwak led the Princeton fencers Saturday at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional at Lafayette as Hamza and Kwak each finished second in his weapon.
The NCAA regional counts for 60 percent of a fencer's NCAA selection résumé while regular-season performance counts for the other 40 percent. There are seven NCAA Championship spots allocated from the Mid-Atlantic/South region toward the 24 in each weapon. Teams can qualify a maximum 12 fencers, two per weapon, for the NCAA Championships, with each of those fencers competing in 23 bouts and each of those wins adding a point to the team's standing in pursuit of the combined men's/women's team title.
Hamza was second among 36 participants in the men's foil competition and Kwak was second in men's épée. Tatijana Stewart led the Tiger women with a fourth-place finish in épée. Complete results are available here.
The qualifiers list for this year's NCAA finals will be announced Tuesday, and the NCAA Championships are set for March 21-24 in Cleveland, Ohio.
