Squash Trio Earns CSA Scholar-Athlete Honors
March 07, 2019 | Women's Squash
The Princeton trio of Samantha Chai, Isabel Hirshberg and Morgan Steelman led Princeton to a terrific 2018-19 women's squash season, but their success wasn't limited to the Jadwin Courts.
The College Squash Association (CSA) has released the Women's Scholar Athlete and Academic Recognition Awardees for the 2018-2019 season, and that trio was among the national recipients.
The Scholar Athlete Award (varsity team players) and Academic Recognition Award (club team players) is granted to juniors or seniors who have played on the team throughout their college career, participated in the majority of the team's matches in the top-10 of the lineup during the season, and achieved a high academic standing at their institution. CSA Scholar Athletes represent the values of the association, specifically including student-athletes achieving a high level of play on court while excelling in the classroom. You can read the full release here.
Chai is a four-year starter who won 50 matches during her Princeton career, including 13 this season. She had back-to-back 3-0 wins at the #5 spot in Princeton's 5-4 victories over both Trinity and Yale during the regular season, which helped the Tigers earn the #2 seed at the Howe Cup. Hirshberg has been a dominant force over the last two years in the bottom third of the Tiger lineup; while she has an incredible 59 victories in her career, 34 of them have come over the last two seasons. She was one of two Tiger players to win every match during the Howe Cup weekend; even more impressively, she won all 16 of her team matches by 3-0 scores.
Steelman is the lone member of this group who will return for the 2019-2020 season. Steelman won 14 matches this season, including a critical 3-2 match against Trinity in the 5-4 road win, and will enter next season with 34 career wins.
