Princeton Loses Heartbreaking Double OT Game to Cornell in ECAC Semis

Micah Zandee-Hart tallied the game-winning goal at 1:22 of the second overtime scoring on a loose puck in the slot to give No. 5 ranked Cornell a 3-2 win over No. 7 ranked Princeton, in the ECAC Hockey semifinal at Lynah Rink this afternoon.

"Our team played tremendous today," head coach Cara Morey said. "They battled all the way until the end. I couldn't be more proud of this team and the way they came together to support each other in every situation. I hope we get a chance to continue our season because I think we are one of the best teams in the country."

Princeton (20-7-5) grabbed a 2-0 lead after goals from Claire Thompson and Carly Bullock in each of the first two periods, forcing Cornell (23-4-6) to pull netminder Marlene Boissonnault less than five minutes into the second. Sophomore Lindsay Browning took over in goal, with just six games under her belt this season.

A finalist for Defenseman of the Year, Thompson put Princeton on the board with a power-play goal, as the top-ranked unit converted on its first opportunity at 7:41 of the first. Senior Karlie Lund and Rookie of the Year Sarah Fillier earned the assists.

Junior Carly Bullock increased the lead to 2-0 on a great play with Annie MacDonald in the second. MacDonald had a great forecheck to win the puck off the board and found Bullock in the high slot. She deked through her defenders and put a backhander past Boissonnault.

Gillis Frechette put the Big Red on the board at 13:25 of the second when she tipped in a Zandee-Hart shot over the glove of Stephanie Neatby. Maddie Mills tied the game at 7:51 of the third when she got Neatby to slide left and pulled a wrap around the other side.

Both Neatby and Browning made big saves as the teams continued to battle.

Princeton had a chance on the power play with just 1:03 remaining in the third period after Grace Graham was called for checking. Overall the Tigers went 1 for 6 on the power play. Cornell was 0 for 3.

Princeton did a great job of killing off a Stephanie Sucharda slashing call in the first 20-minute overtime and had a 14-9 shot advantage in the first overtime period but couldn't get another over the line.

Neatby made 36 saves while Browning finished with 34 as Princeton outshot Cornell 42-39.

Princeton will have to see how the rest of the conference tournaments games shake out and will learn its post-season fate on Sunday night at 9 p.m., during the NCAA selection show. Only four at-large teams will make the NCAA tournament.

This was the third longest game in program history at 81:22
