#1 Cornell, #2 Princeton Lightweights Set To Race On Cayuga For The Platt Cup
April 10, 2019 | Men's Rowing - Lightweight
PLATT CUP HISTORY l LATEST NATIONAL POLL
Since the start of the 2018-19 academic year, there is only one boat that has beaten the Princeton V8 in any sort of race.
On Saturday, the Tigers will get a chance to avenge that loss and retain one of the most historic trophies in the sport.
The second-ranked Princeton men's lightweight rowing team will head to Ithaca, N.Y., this weekend to take on top-ranked Cornell on the Cayuga Lake Inlet Saturday morning. The regatta is set to begin at 8:40 am, with the varsity eight race scheduled at 9:40 am.
Either Cornell or Princeton got each of the 12 first-place votes in the latest IRA Coaches Poll, and both teams are perfect so far this season. Princeton, which knocked off defending IRA champion Columbia two weeks ago, improved to 6-0 last weekend by defeating Dartmouth, Delaware and Temple on Lake Carnegie. Princeton holds a 38-17 advantage in the all-time series, though Cornell has won each of the last three at home.
Cornell's wins over Princeton came during the fall, but neither came at 2,000 meters. The Big Red and the Tigers finished 1-2 at both the Head of the Charles and the Princeton Chase in the lightweight events. Princeton was a perfect 3-0 over Cornell last spring; the Tigers won the Platt Cup by more than three seconds on Lake Carnegie, and they topped the Big Red at both the Eastern Sprints and the IRA Championships as well.
This will be the first of two road events for Princeton, which will travel to the Schuylkill River next weekend to compete for the Wood-Hammond Trophy against both Penn and Georgetown.
