With Road Swing Set to End, Princeton to Visit Columbia, Host Cornell This Weekend
April 11, 2019 | Women's Tennis
The 2019 Ivy League women's tennis schedule had four matches away from campus for 39th-ranked Princeton and three at home. The way it played out, the first four of those were scheduled for the road, followed by three at home.
Two weekends into the Ivy slate, the Tigers haven't had trouble on the road yet, and they've got a 3-0 league record and a top-40 national ranking to show for it. Now, the chance to finish the league road run perfect is here, with the Tigers heading to No. 37 Columbia (13-2, 2-1 Ivy) Friday for a top-40 battle followed by, at last, the team's first home Ivy match, Sunday against Cornell (6-12, 0-3). Both are 1 p.m. starts, and Tiger regular-season home matches are admission-free.
It'll be the second time this season Princeton (14-4, 3-0) has faced each of these teams, as the Tigers ran into both on their ECAC path. Princeton opened that tournament at Yale in February with a 5-0 win over Cornell, and after a semifinal win over Brown, Princeton's title defense try came to an end with a 4-1 loss to Columbia in the final.
Before the ECAC loss, Princeton had won four straight against Columbia since a 2015 road loss, and Princeton has won two straight against Cornell since an Ivy defeat the last time the Big Red came to Princeton, in 2017.
Grace Joyce leads the Tigers in dual-match wins at 15-2, going a perfect 13-0 combined between third and fourth singles. Nathalie Rodilosso and Stephanie Schrage, both 12-2 and all as doubles partners, co-lead the team in doubles wins.
Beyond including a top-40 battle, the weekend is a chance for the Tigers to stay perfect in the Ivy League and remain atop the standings, with the Tigers and Yale tied at 3-0 and Columbia and Harvard just a match behind at 2-1. Brown and Yale will come to Princeton next weekend to complete the regular season.
