Princeton Battles Harvard to Final Out at '95 Field
April 20, 2019 | Softball
It was in doubt until the final out Saturday afternoon at the Class of 1895 Field, but Harvard held on to defeat the Princeton softball team 4-3 to open the series.
The teams will meet again for a 12:30 p.m. doubleheader Sunday back at '95. The games will be video streamed on ESPN+ (Game 1 | Game 2), and live stats are available here. Admission is free.
Harvard got on the board in the top of the first with a hit batter, a base hit and a sacrifice fly in the first three batters. The Crimson lead became 3-0 in the third when a base hit and an error put two on for an Erin Lockhart two-RBI double, but Princeton got one of those runs back in the bottom half when three straight singles set up Allison Harvey to drive in a run with a base hit to cut the deficit to 3-1. The Tigers had the bases loaded with one out, but a liner back to the pitcher and a throw to first ended the inning.
That's where it stayed until the seventh. Two base hits and a ground ball pushed the Crimson lead to 4-1, though Princeton had one last push in the bottom of the inning. Three straight singles loaded the bases, and a Kaylee Grant base hit picked up a run to make it 4-2. Princeton got within a run on a wild pitch, and a walk to Harvey reloaded the bases before a ground ball to first base allowed the Crimson to hold on.Â
Harvard stayed in first in the Ivy with the win, improving to 10-3, while Princeton fell two games back at 8-5 with eight league games to play.
The Tigers recognized their six-player senior class of Mikayla Blaska, Grant, Keeley Walsh, Kaitlyn Waslawski, Riley Wilkinson and Alex Viscusi before the game.
