Madison Soukup, Morgan Steelman Elected To Lead Princeton Women's Squash For 2019-20 Season
April 09, 2019 | Women's Squash
Madison Soukup and Morgan Steelman came in as the lone members of the Class of 2020, but they have consistently made a significant impact on the Princeton women's squash program. They will try to save their biggest impact for their senior seasons, when they will serve as co-captains for the Tigers next year.
Soukup has put together one of the most impressive winning percentages of anybody on the roster (.853) and she has gone 10-1 against Ivy League opponents. Arguably the biggest victory of her career came in Jadwin Gym during her sophomore season, when she picked up the first point for Princeton in an eventual 5-4 win over #2 Trinity. That team victory helped Princeton move to the #1 spot in the national rankings, and it was one of her career-best 17 wins on the season.
Steelman will bring 34 career wins into her senior season, including 14 from the past year. Like Soukup the year earlier, Steelman had a crucial win during a 5-4 victory over Trinity this past season, and that also helped move Princeton to the #1 spot. Steelman was one of three players to compete in every team match during the season, and she didn't limit her success and consistency to the squash courts alone; she was one of three Tigers to earn CSA Scholar-Athlete honors this past season.
With a roster that often saw six underclassmen starting this past season, head coach Gail Ramsay is excited about the leadership she believes this rising senior duo will provide.
"I am looking forward to working closely with Madison and Morgan this coming season," Ramsay said. "I think they will make a wonderful pair and will share the honor and responsibility of leading the team. They are both hard working and determined to do their best to encourage and motivate their teammates to 'be great' for next season."
