VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Princeton Tigers rallied with the final six points to secure a sweep over the Temple Owls (25-15, 25-14, 25-23) to start the Villanova Tournament on Friday evening.
The Tigers used a 7-1 sprint to take a 10-3 advantage in set one, highlighted by four kills from Devon Peterkin. Already up five, Princeton scored seven straight points to take a commanding 19-7 lead and never looked back in a 25-15 decision.
Temple was in front, 7-6, early in set two, but Princeton ran off seven consecutive tallies, jumping ahead, 13-7. A 4-0 extension later put head coach Sabrina King's unit up nine, 20-11, and they picked up a 25-14 victory.
The Owls took the lead for a majority of the third set, going ahead, 17-12. Temple kept Princeton at bay until calling timeout while leading 22-19. After an attack error, the Owls were two points away from extending the match into a fourth set.
They didn't score again.
Elena Montgomery had two kills and two service aces while Peterkin picked up the other two points as the Tigers collected the sweep. Those two (Peterkin 18, Montgomery 13) combined for 31 kills in the victory.
