Asom '19 Signs With Benfica in Portugal
January 16, 2020 | Women's Soccer
Mimi Asom '19, one of Princeton's all-time leading scorers, has signed with the Portuguese top-division club Benfica, the club announced this week.
Asom finished her career at Princeton third in program history in both career goals (43) and points (95), helping Princeton to three Ivy League titles and three NCAA tournaments, including the second round in 2015 and the quarterfinals in 2017.
"I couldn't be happier for Mimi," Princeton coach Sean Driscoll said. "Joining Benfica is a once in a lifetime opportunity. She has the rare privilege of playing for one of the best clubs in Europe and, at the same time, gets to immerse herself in the Portuguese culture. I look forward to seeing her represent Princeton women's soccer in a Benfica Jersey."
As of Asom's signing, Benfica stood at a perfect 12-0 atop the 12-team Portuguese league, which plays a 22-match schedule that runs through May. The league's winner will gain a spot in the 2020-21 UEFA Champions League qualifying round.
