Jason Garrett Named Giants' Offensive Coordinator
January 18, 2020 | Football
Jason Garrett is heading back to New Jersey.
The Princeton alum and 1988 Bushnell Cup winner has become the offensive coordinator for the Giants after not being retained by the Cowboys as their head coach. Garrett had an 85-67 record in Dallas.
Garrett threw for 4,274 yards, the fourth-best total in program history, as Princeton's quarterback, and he is the program's record holder for lowest career interception rate. Princeton head coach Bob Surace was the center for the Tigers when Garrett was the quarterback, and the two have remained extremely close through the years.
Garrett has also stayed very close to Princeton University and Princeton football during his time in the NFL, including running a football camp at Princeton each spring as part of his Starfish Charities foundation. The camps mission includes "helping the participants with both football and life skills that will prepare them for the next season and beyond with an emphasis on making good choices on and off the field."
The universally well-liked Garrett spent seven seasons as a quarterback with the Cowboys, winning two Super Bowls, and his other NFL stops included being the backup quarterback for the Giants from 2000-03. The highlight of his NFL playing career was the 1994 Thanksgiving Day game against Green Bay, when he threw for 311 yards and two touchdowns in a 42-31 win.
In his new role under rookie head coach Joe Judge, Garrett will bring the coaching staff much-needed experience as a head coach the past decade. He will also be working with two of the most promising young players in the league, quarterback Daniel Jones and running back Saquon Barkley.
