PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The No. 22 Princeton University women's swimming & diving team opened competition at the Ivy League Championships in spectacular fashion as it shattered records in the 200 medley and 800 freestyle relays Wednesday evening inside the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatic Center.
In the first event of the championship the team of Gianna Garcia, Christie Chong, Elaine Zhou and Nicole Venema finished second and set a new school record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:37.86 seconds. They shaved almost two seconds off the previous record of 1:39.21 seconds set by Garcia, Chong, Jennifer Secrest and Venema at the HYP Meet on Saturday, February 1 inside DeNunzio Pool.
The second race of the evening also saw Princeton deliver an outstanding result, as four freshmen topped the previous school record in 800 freestyle relay by over four seconds. Ellie Marquardt, Venema, Amelia Liu and Addison Smith finished second and set a new Princeton record in 7:04.23 seconds. The previous record of 7:08.58 seconds set at the 2017-18 Ivy League Championships and held by Izzy Reis, Claire Mcllmail, Joanna Curry and Monica McGrath. Along with the quartet's time being a school record, it was also an NCAA provincial qualifying standard time.
After two events, the Tigers sit in second place with 112 points and narrowly trails Harvard University who has 128. Yale University rounds out the top three with 108 points.
