June 14, 2020 | Baseball
PRINCETON, N.J. – James Proctor has signed a professional contract with the Cincinnati Reds.
This is the third straight year that a Princeton player has either been drafted or signed a contract with a Major League Baseball team. Ryan Smith was selected by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim last year while Ben Gross was picked by the Houston Astros the year prior.
Proctor finished his career ninth all-time in strikeouts per nine innings (8.7). His junior campaign was his best season during his time at Princeton as he had a 4.65 ERA, striking out 66 in 50 1/3 innings. His 11.8 punchouts per nine during that year was the fourth highest in program history. He finished with 133 strikeouts in 137 2/3 career innings.
Princeton had three players reach the Major Leagues last season in Mike Ford, David Hale and Matt Bowman. Ford hit .259 with 12 home runs, 25 RBI and an OPS of .909 for the New York Yankees. His teammate David Hale appeared in 20 games, contributing a 3.11 ERA in 37 2/3 innings. Bowman added a 3.66 ERA with the Reds in 27 outings.
Alec Keller and Danny Barnes reached the AAA level in 2019 as Keller played for Fresno Grizzlies while Barnes played with the Buffalo Bisons. Keller finished with a .302 average and .346 on-base percentage in 119 games, knocking in 45 runs and stealing 10 bases. Barnes struck out 10 in 8 2/3 innings in an injury-shortened season.
