Brewer Set To Retire July 1st
June 26, 2020 | Baseball
21 seasons.
6 Ivy League titles.
8 Gehrig Division crowns.
363 wins.
It is a long list of accolades for Princeton baseball during Lloyd Brewer's time, but the countless number of players and alumni who were helped by Brewer is even larger.
Brewer has announced his retirement effective July 1st.
"I have been so blessed to have been able to work side by side with LB over the past 21 years," said Robert H.B. Baldwin '42 Head Coach of Baseball Scott Bradley. We started out as teammates while at North Carolina and we have grown into lifelong friends. LB has been such an integral part of this program and we will all miss having him around on a regular basis!"
"LB was a great coach for so many reasons," stated Ramzi Haddad. "What made him great wasn't just his baseball knowledge or experience with the game, it was how much he cared. LB would routinely ask me about my family and my life outside of baseball. He remembered small details about our lives and cared about us as much more than baseball players. His ability to connect with his players on a personal level was unmatched. Not many coaches can be as close to their players as LB was and still command the team's respect. I think that was only possible because we knew how much he cared about us. We love you LB!"
When the news broke about his retirement his son Jason and Stephen Wendell '06, President of the Princeton Baseball Alumni Association, gathered dozens of quotes and stories from alumni and coaches and put together a book that gave to Brewer.
Here are some of those …
"I was fortunate to have a fairly long professional career, and I owe a big thank you to LB for his help as I grew into a much better pitcher over my time at Princeton. He helped me off the field as well. His grounded and consistent personality were like a rock, and he was an important resource for me and my teammates as we were away from home for the first time."
Ross Ohlendorf '05, two-time Ivy League Champion, nine-year MLB professional
"He's been an unbelievable role model for our players and me. He helped me become a better coach and more importantly, a better person. Lloyd showed me how to have good relationships with our players while keeping a strong coaching barrier. One of my favorite things about him is how family-oriented he is. In this profession, it can get difficult with all of the ups and downs and time away from home. I hope to have my own family one day and I plan on doing things the way that he's shown me."
Mike Russo, assistant coach
"Well, this particular memory took 17 years to develop. Since I live in New Hampshire now, it revolves around our time in Hanover. Turn the clock back to the Spring of 2001, and that's when we clinched our second Ivy League Championship in a row. We did it in Hanover, on Dartmouth's home field. It was a pleasure to celebrate that accomplishment with Coach Brewer. He, of course, helped us grind our way to that pinnacle. Fast forward 17 years, and on May 6th, 2018, I took my family to watch Princeton play at Dartmouth. We had our 5-year-old daughter and our 3-year-old son with us, and after Coach Brewer tracked down a foul ball, he gave it to our son. Darius held it up proudly, and we still have it to this day. Thank you, Coach Brewer, for helping me experience so much joy on the field and thank you for bringing so much joy to our son. You will be missed in the Orange and Black!"
