November 17, 2021 | Women's Soccer
For the seventh time in program history, the Princeton women's soccer team has advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament, this time winning the chance to take on TCU on Friday at Rutgers with a spot in the round of 16 on the line.
vs. TCU, NCAA Second Round, at Rutgers, Friday, 2 p.m. | BTN+ | Live Stats | Match Notes (PDF)
NCAA tournament history: Princeton is in the second round for the first time since 2017 and the fourth time in the last nine competitive seasons, along with 2012 and 2015, with the other second-round appearances coming in 1982, 2001 and 2004. The tournaments that have seen Princeton advance twice were in 2004, when Princeton beat Villanova 1-0 in overtime to make the round of 16, and in 2017, when Princeton advanced past N.C. State in a penalty-kick shootout. That N.C. State game in 2017 was also the only time Princeton has gone to PKs in the NCAA tournament.
At Rutgers: Despite Rutgers being about a half-hour's drive from Princeton, and with both programs having made frequent trips to the NCAAs, Friday's game will be the first time Princeton has played an NCAA tournament game at Rutgers. The teams met once before in the tournament, in 2001 in Princeton in a second-round game Rutgers won 1-0.
Against the top 10: TCU is ranked No. 8 in the most recent United Soccer Coaches poll, which came out just before the tournament began. TCU is the third top-10 team Princeton will face this year, and two of the three top-10 meetings will happen on the same field, with Princeton having defeated then-No. 9 Rutgers 4-3 on Sept. 9. Four days earlier, Princeton tied then-No. 8 Georgetown 1-1 in D.C.
History vs. TCU: TCU and Princeton have met once before, on Sept. 28, 1990 at TCU in a 3-1 Princeton win. That game, one of two on the trip that included a game at SMU, was the first time the program had played away from the East Coast.Â
TCU in the tournament: Back in the 1990 meeting, TCU was still a quarter-century away from making its first NCAA tournament, which it did in 2016. Friday's game will be TCU's third appearance in the second round of the tournament. In 2018, the Horned Frogs beat BYU to start before losing to Texas A&M in the second round, and last spring, in the modified 48-team tournament, TCU started in the second round, defeating New Mexico there before going on to the quarterfinals after advancing past Georgetown in a penalty-kick shootout in the round of 16 before a loss to Virginia.
Record keeping: Princeton already has 15 wins on the season, third-most in program history. A 16th win would put Princeton even with the 2017 team (16-3-1) and behind only the 2004 team (19-3) for most wins in program history.
The streaks: Princeton has won six in a row, the 14th time in program history Princeton has a single-season win streak of six or more games. A seventh straight win would be tied for the seventh-longest streak in program history and the ninth time Princeton has won at least seven straight. Princeton also has a shutout streak of 577:42, its longest since a 2009 shutout streak of 621:09. Another shutout would make this streak the longest since a 2008 run of 722:48.
More shutouts: Princeton has had 11 shutouts this season, the fifth-most in program history, and another would tie the 2021 season with the 2004, 2017 and 2018 seasons with 12, behind only the 13 shutouts in the 2000 season. Of the five seasons with 11-plus shutouts, three have come over the team's last four competitive seasons. Senior Grace Barbara has been in goal for seven solo shutouts on the season, including five in the current run of six consecutive shutouts.Â
On offense: Princeton has had 14 players score this season, the program's most since the 1999 season also saw 14 players score. Seniors Tatum Gee and Gabi Juarez co-lead the team with eight goals and 21 points apiece, with Gee joining Juarez atop the list on Gee's two goals against Vermont.
All-Ivy: Princeton had seven athletic All-Ivy honorees, with senior keeper Grace Barbara and backliners in senior Lucy Rickerson and junior Madison Curry on the first team, senior forwards Tatum Gee and Gabi Juarez on the second team with sophomore midfielder Aria Nagai, and junior midfielder Marissa Hart an honorable mention.
