Series vs. Iowa • Excepting the 2020-21 season, when Princeton did not compete, this will be the third year in a row that Princeton and Iowa have met in a dual. Iowa won each of the first two meetings in the current run, 31-10 in Iowa City on Nov. 16, 2018 and 30-9 on Dec. 8, 2019 in Princeton. The teams met in a dual one other time, on Dec. 1, 2001, for a 36-7 Iowa win at Blair Academy, in Blairstown, N.J., alma mater of then-future Princeton coach Chris Ayres, who, at the time, was only months out of his undergrad days at Lehigh University.
Taking on the best • Princeton will wrestle five fellow teams in the most recent NWCA team rankings, which have Princeton at No. 21. After No. 1 Iowa, the Tigers will return to duals once the calendar flips to 2022, hosting No. 5 N.C. State and No. 7 Arizona State in January, No. 12 Cornell in February, and visiting No. 18 Rutgers in February.
Last we saw them • Princeton's dual at Iowa will be its first since Feb. 23, 2020, an 18-15 win over Rutgers that gave Princeton its first win over the Scarlet Knights since 1990. Since that day, Princeton has had two competitions, finishing fifth at the 2020 EIWAs and starting this season at the Southeast Open in Virginia on Nov. 7.
Some familiar, some new • Of the 13 wrestlers included in Princeton's probable lineup, only three wrestled in the teams' 2019 dual in Jadwin Gym, in Patrick Glory (125), Quincy Monday (157) and Travis Stefanik (184). All three went on to earn bids to the 2020 NCAA Championships, which were lost to the pandemic.
Starting off strong • Junior Quincy Monday (157) and freshman Luke Stout (197) began the season with championships at the Southeast Open. Each came against a Virginia Tech wrestler in the final, Monday's against 30th-ranked Connor Brady and Stout's against Cody Howard.
Rank 'em • Four Princeton wrestlers are included in the latest InterMat rankings, with Patrick Glory ranked No. 2 at 125, Quincy Monday ranked No. 7 at 157, Travis Stefanik ranked No. 24 at 184, and Luke Stout ranked No. 29 at 197.
What a year it was • Along with defeating Rutgers for the first time in 30 years, Princeton beat Cornell for the first time since 1986 in 2020, winning the program's first Ivy League title since 1986 and snapping a Cornell Ivy dual-match win streak that had lasted since 2002. The wrestling program had been the holder of the longest Ivy League title drought among the 33 Princeton sports that compete for Ivy League titles.
Match wins against Iowa • In the three previous dual meetings, seven Tiger wrestlers won a total of eight bouts against the Hawkeyes, with Milo Adams '04 (149) and Greg Parker '03 (174) winning in 2001, Matthew Kolodzik '21 (149), Travis Stefanik (174) and Patrick Brucki '21 (197) winning in 2018, and Patrick Glory (125), Quincy Monday (157) and Stefanik (184) winning in 2019. Stefanik would become the only Princeton wrestler to win three times in duals with Iowa with another win, and Glory and Monday would join Stefanik as the only other wrestlers to win twice.
For country • While some Princeton teammates were competing at the Southeast Open, Patrick Glory was in Southeastern Europe, representing the U.S. at 57kg at the U23 World Championships after winning the opportunity to compete there with his U.S. U23 title in May. Glory battled Iran's Ahmad Masoud Mohammadnezhadjavan to an 11-11 finish in the round of 16 but fell on criteria.
On our way back • Patrick Glory (125), Quincy Monday (157), Grant Cuomo (165) and Travis Stefanik (184) were four of Princeton's six qualifiers to the 2020 NCAA Championships, with a pair of 2021 grads in Matthew Kolodzik (149) and Patrick Brucki (197) as the others.
