Men's Water Polo Rallies For NWPC Title
November 21, 2021 | Men's Water Polo
PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 13 Princeton Tigers rallied from a three-goal deficit to take down the No. 19 St. Francis-Brooklyn Terriers, 9-6, to secure the Northeast Water Polo Conference championship.
The Terriers jumped in front with the first three goals of the contest, taking a 3-0 lead after eight minutes. Keller Maloney got Princeton on the board with 7:33 left in the first half. Mitchell Cooper and Wyatt Benson registered tallies to tie the game before Vladan Mitrovic's goal with 51 seconds remaining put Princeton ahead for the first time.
The Tigers took a 4-3 advantage into the intermission.
Maloney's second goal of the contest put Princeton ahead by two, 5-3, at the 4:59 mark of the third stanza. Mitrovic extended the Tigers' advantage before the two teams exchanged tallies, setting the score at 7-4 with eight minutes to go.
Maloney's third goal pushed the Tigers' lead to four, 8-4. St. Francis-Brooklyn made one more push, closing the deficit to two, but Mitrovic's goal solidified the victory.
"I love these guys," said Princeton head coach Dustin Litvak. "It's crazy to even have this opportunity after not playing last year. Obviously, we're super grateful for the administration and the league for doing everything they can to let us be here. Honestly, I'm just happy we extended the season. I love coming to practice every day and competing. This was a great moment to celebrate with our tremendous seniors who have been the best captains."
It's the sixth time that the Tigers have won a conference championship. Princeton last won the NWPC title in 2018, defeating Harvard. Today was also the team's 25th win, tying the program mark set by the 2004 squad that won the CWPA Eastern crown and placed fourth at NCAAs.
The 2021 NCAA men's water polo championship selections will be revealed later tonight on NCAA.com.
