Men's Ice Hockey Nipped By RIT, 1-0, In Overtime
November 27, 2021 | Men's Ice Hockey
For the second night in a row, Princeton and RIT battled in a one-goal contest at Hobey Baker Rink, but Saturday's tilt was a far cry from Saturday's back-and-forth affair as both teams ramped up the defense. One night after combining for nine goals, the two teams played a scoreless regulation before RIT found the game-winner on a power play 0:35 into overtime for a 1-0 win.
Jake Hamacher netted the winner for RIT, slapping home a shot from the point while RIT was on a 4-on-3 advantage following an Ian Murphy holding penalty with 1:00 left in the third period.
Princeton killed the first minute of the penalty to force overtime, but a cycle at the top of the zone from RIT worked the puck from Caleb Moretz to Dan Willett and back to Hamacher who sent a slap shot through the Princeton PK and inside the right post.
Until that shot, Princeton had played its best defensive game of the season. Princeton allowed just 21 shots, the second-fewest by an opponent this season and allowed a season-best one goal. Aidan Porter made 20 saves in goal for Princeton.
Tommy Scarfone had 21 saves at the other end for RIT.
Princeton's best chances came in the second period, including a short-handed breakaway from Christian O'Neill which Scarfone turned aside. After that kill from Princeton, Matt Kellenberger blasted a shot off the post.
In the third, Scarfone came up with back-to-back saves on Luke Keenan 6:52 into the period.
Princeton is back in ECAC play next weekend, heading to Union (Dec. 3) and RPI (Dec. 4) for a pair of 7 p.m. faceoffs.
