Princeton Names Five Men's Lacrosse Captains For 2022
December 28, 2021 | Men's Lacrosse
The 2022 Princeton men's lacrosse team will be represented by five captains, Princeton head coach Matt Madalon has announced. The five captains will be seniors Jamie Atkinson, George Baughan, Chris Brown, Erik Peters and Andrew Song.
The 2022 season will also mark the fourth time in program history that Princeton has had five captains.
"These are five outstanding young men who all are extraordinary leaders of our program," says Madalon. "We're very fortunate to have them serve as the foundation of our team for this coming season. We couldn't be more excited to get started."
Jamie Atkinson has been a reliable midfield scorer in his career. A strong outside shooter, he has been in either the first or second midfield each of his last two seasons, with 10 points in 2019 and three goals and two assists in five games in 2020.
George Baughan, a two-time captain, was an Inside Lacrosse first-team All-American defenseman in 2020 and a USILA honorable mention All-American in 2019, when he was also a unanimous first-team All-Ivy League selection. He was named second-team All-Ivy League as a freshman in 2018.
Chris Brown has scored at least one goal in every game of his career to date, a streak of 32 straight games that is the second-longest in Princeton history, behind only the 46 straight that Chris Massey had from 1996-98. He is the only Division I player in his class who has at least one goal in every career game, and he had at least two in every game of 2020, with 13 in five games. He enters his senior year with 70 career goals and 107 career points.
Erik Peters has started in goal for the last 14 games Princeton has played, having made nine straight starts to end the 2019 season and then starting all five games in the shortened 2020 season. His career high is 17 saves, against Dartmouth in 2019, but his best game came at Virginia in 2020, when he made 16 saves in a 16-12 Princeton win. He also had a 15-save outing against Johns Hopkins in an 18-11 win in 2020, and he has reached double figures in saves in 12 of 14 career starts.
Andrew Song has been Princeton's top longstick midfielder since Day 1 of his Tiger career, as well as an important member of the face-off unit. He had 16 ground balls and five caused turnovers in five games in 2020, and he had three goals, 56 ground balls and 16 caused turnovers in the 2019 season. In addition to his time at Princeton, Song also represented China in the 2018 World Championships in Israel.
The other times that Princeton had five captains in a season were 1998 (Christian Cook, Jon Hess, Jesse Hubbard, Massey, Mark Whaling), 2003 (Ryan Boyle, Owen Daly, Damien Davis, Brad Dumont, Anthony Perna) and 2020 (Nick Bauer, Baughan, Jon Levine, Phillip Robertson, Michael Sowers).
Princeton opens the 2022 regular season Feb. 19 at home against Monmouth.
