May 02, 2021 | Wrestling
Wrestling at 92kg, Jackson held the top seed at the UWW Senior Nationals April 30-May 1 in Coralville, Iowa and won all three of his bouts, never giving up more than a point in any of the three.
Competing under the banner of the New York Athletic Club, Jackson defeated Chris Droege of Compound Wrestling at the Great Lakes National Training Center 10-0 in the quarters. He beat Scottie Boykin of TMWC/Spartan Combat RTC 12-1 in the semis, and the win in the final came 6-1 over Kyven Gadson of the Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club.
The bracket is available here.
The event contributes points toward representing the U.S. on the Senior World Team that will compete in Norway in October after the World Team Trials in September at a site to be announced. It will also help in qualification for the Pan American Championships in Guatemala in May.
In the junior freestyle tournament, Matt Cover, a freshman last year, finished third in the 125kg competition, advancing to the quarterfinals in the main draw before winning four consolation bouts to take third place. Cover opened with a 6-5 win over Cornell rookie Lewis Fernandes in the round of 16 before falling to Missouri freshman Steven Kolcheff 7-2 in the quarters. In his third consolation bout, Cover defeated Oklahoma State freshman Konner Doucet 5-1 before a rematch with Fernandes that Cover took 11-0.
Incoming freshman Nick Masters advanced to the round of 16 in the junior freestyle 61kg tournament, winning his round-of-32 match after a round-of-64 bye. Masters also finished eighth in the 60kg junior Greco-Roman competition, winning a round-of-16 match against Michigan State freshman Andrew Chambal 8-0 before a loss in the quarterfinals. Masters then went 1-1 in consolation matches to get into the seventh-place match.
