Edwards Leads U.S. To Silver Medal In 8+ Final At U-23 World Rowing Championships
July 11, 2021 | Men's Rowing - Lightweight
RACICE, Czech Republic - Sydney Edwards '21 led the United States 8+ to a silver medal in a fantastic final race at the U-23 World Rowing Championships today.
A wildly entertaining race started with four boats within five meters of each at the first 500 with Germany leading the way. Then the United States jumped in front at the 1,000m point with Italy right on its heels just a tenth of a second back with Germany and Great Britain looming. The United States still held on to its advantage at 1500m, but Germany and Great Britain remained less than a half second behind. The three boats appeared almost neck and neck during the last 500m push before Great Britain caught the United States at the last moment to take the gold (5:34.55). Germany earned the bronze at 5:35.58.
"Sydney is making history at the helm of men's boats at the international level," said Princeton head coach Marty Crotty. "It is representative of her talent and leadership qualities and we're very proud of her."
Eion Gaffney '24 (Ireland 2x) and his pair mate Rory O'Neill placed fourth in their final (6:29.91). Germany, France and Belarus were the medal winners.
Nick Aronow '25 (United States 1x) won a thrilling B Final (7:13.62) over Denmark (7:13.81). Aronow trailed by almost a second at the 500m to Ireland and was about even with Denmark. Those two finally caught Ireland and exchanged the leads before reaching the 1500m. Denmark held the lead for almost the entire final 500m until Aronow caught the boat at the very end to secure the win.
It was a great week of racing for the Princeton men's lightweight team as the Aaron Wenk '25 earned gold for Germany (4x) in addition to Edwards' honor.
