Tokyo Olympics Preview: Ashleigh Johnson
July 21, 2021 | Women's Water Polo
The United States Women's Water Polo Team goes for its third straight gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Johnson was the starting goalie on the 2016 squad that won every game by at least six goals en route to the top spot at the tournament.
Johnson would later become just the second Princeton athlete (Bill Bradley) to return to the school and play after earning a gold medal.
The United States recently finished off a three-game exhibition series with Russia during the fourth of July weekend, winning each contest by double-digits. The squad also won its seventh straight FINA Super League Final in June. The U.S. is on a 19-game winning streak, having last lost to Australia in January of 2020. It was the team's first loss in 69 games and since April of 2018.
One of the greatest athletes in Princeton history and a 2016 Olympic Gold Medalist, Johnson won the C. Otto von Kienbusch and Cutino Awards during her senior season in 2017. She was the first player in Princeton women's water polo history to be named first team All-America and third ever to be picked as All-American in each of her four seasons.
Johnson finished her Princeton career with a 100-17 record, along with a school-record 1,362 saves and a .693 save percentage. She was a 19-time Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Defensive Player of the Week award winner, a four-time first-team all-conference player and the CWPA Player of the Year.
