Men's Hockey Defeated By No. 1 Quinnipiac
January 18, 2022 | Men's Ice Hockey
HAMDEN, Conn. – Playing for the first time in 37 days, Princeton was in for a battle against the nation's top team and hung with No. 1 Quinnipiac for the opening half of the first period before the Bobcats scored three times in a span of 3:48 to build a 3-0 lead and never looked back.
Princeton's most recent game before venturing to Hamden came on December 11, with pauses both expected – the annual break for exams and the holidays – and unexpected – a six-game halt due to COVID-19 protocols – keeping the Tigers away from game action for over a month.
Stepping back onto the ice for the first time in over 30 days and lining up against a team riding a 15-game unbeaten streak to the nation's top ranking proved a tough draw as the Tigers were unable to stem the tide after a quick burst of offense from Quinnipiac in the final 10:00 of the first period broke a scoreless tie.
Skylar Brind'Amour opened the scoring with 8:02 remaining in the period. He slipped open in the slot to fire home a one-timer with assists to Oliver Chau and Brendan Less.
The Bobcats would then score twice in just under a minute to add to their lead. Michael Lombardi was first with 5:19 remaining. Following sustained pressure from the Bobcats, the puck worked from the point to Lombardi on the wall whose one-timer was fanned on a bit, but the change of pace worked in Lombardi's favor as Ethan Pearson was anticipating a harder shot and was unable to adjust in time.
Quinnipiac tacked on a power-play goal 0:55 later, with Ty Smilanic jamming home a loose puck only 0:07 into the man-advantage.
In the second, the Bobcats added three goals to take a 6-0 lead through two.
Desi Burgart found an opening at the far post just after the Tigers had killed a penalty, banging home a pass at the 5:10 mark of the period. The Bobcats would then tally twice in a span of 1:17, first off a breakaway from Ethan de Jong and then Guus van Ness capitalized on a loose rebound just over a minute later.
The Bobcats tacked on three more goals in the third period for the final result.
The Tigers were outshot, 46-17. Ethan Pearson made 21 saves 28:49 of play before Aidan Porter came on and made 16 saves in 31:11 of play.
The Tigers are back on the road this weekend, taking on Cornell (1/21) and Colgate (1/22). Faceoff for both games is set for 7 p.m.
