Men's Ice Hockey Downs No. 8 Cornell, 5-4
January 21, 2022 | Men's Ice Hockey
Three nights after a tough loss on the road at the nation's No. 1 team after a 37-day layoff, Princeton (4-10-1, 3-5-0 ECAC) responded with a gutty 5-4 win at No. 8 Cornell (12-4-1, 7-2-1 ECAC) to pick up three big points in ECAC play.
Spencer Kersten had two goals and Corey Andonovski had three assists to pace the Tigers in a wild affair between two ancient Ivy rivals.
The win is the first at Lynah Rink for head coach Ron Fogarty, and Princeton's first win overall in Ithaca since 2/19/13 – a span of seven games. The Tigers are now 3-0-0 against Ivy opponents this season, and improve to 4-6-0 on the road.
The victory over a Top-10 team is Princeton's first since knocking off a No. 2-ranked Cornell team, 4-1, in the ECAC Semifinals in Lake Placid on 3/16/18. Princeton's last regular-season win over a Top-10 opponent was also a 5-4 win, this one an overtime defeat of No. 4 Penn State on 1/28/17.
The Tigers built a 3-0 lead midway through the game, then had to answer after the Big Red cut the lead to just one with 2:57 to play on a Jack Malone goal.
That goal from Cornell set off a furious finish as the two teams combined for five goals over the game's final 2:57.
Kersten countered just under a minute after Malone had made it 3-2, roofing a gorgeous Corey Andonovski pass from behind the net to give the Tigers what appeared to be a comfortable two-goal cushion.

The Big Red had other ideas, however, with Travis Mitchell scoring an extra-attacker goal with 0:49 left in the game to once again trim Princeton's lead to just a goal.
Cornell kept their goalie on the bench in search of an equalizer, but Andonovski who lay out to block a shot from the point and Ian Murphy fired from his own defensive end and into the empty net to regain a two-goal lead for the Tigers.
Murphy's goal ended up being the game winner as Cornell would not go away. Following a high-sticking penalty on Andonovski, Ben Berard wired home a slap shot on the power play with 0:10 remaining to give the Big Red one last glimmer of hope. Princeton would hold on, not allowing any further chances from Cornell in the final seconds.
Jeremie Forget finished with 23 saves, including 16 over the first two periods as Princeton staked itself to a lead.
Similar to Tuesday's tilt at No. 1 Quinnipiac, Princeton found itself scoreless with a top-10 opponent midway through the first period. The script was flipped in Ithaca, though, as the Tigers were the ones who broke through to take a multi-goal lead after the opening frame.
Joe Berg struck first, connecting on his first collegiate goal just past the midway point of the first period. A great forecheck from Nick Seitz forced a Cornell defender to turn the puck over, and Berg was in the right place to fire home a quick shot from the slot to make it 1-0.
Just under four minutes later, Adam Robbins deflected home a Mike Ufberg wrister from the point to double Princeton's lead and send the Tigers to the first intermission ahead, 2-0.Big One For Bergy!

Kersten's first goal of the game came 7:13 into the second period, also the finish to a nifty setup from Andonovski. The Tigers worked transition, with Ian Murphy dropping a touch pass to Andonovski at the blue line which allowed him to then take a defender wide to buy time for Kersten to drive towards goal and backhand home the subsequent cross-ice feed from Andonovski.
