Forget's 42 Saves Backstop Men's Ice Hockey To 2-2 Tie At Colgate
January 22, 2022 | Men's Ice Hockey
HAMILTON – Princeton rallied twice at Colgate, forcing overtime and securing a point in a 2-2 tie with the Raiders.
The game featured some history for the Tigers as they participated in their first shootout in ECAC play, in the end it was the Raiders who notched the extra point with a 2-0 edge in the breakaways.
Jeremie Forget had 42 saves for the Tigers, including a whopping 22 saves in the second period to keep his team within range entering the final period.
Liam Gorman would net the game-tying goal 1:12 into the third period. The Tigers won a faceoff in the Colgate end, and the puck eventually worked back to Mark Paolini for a wrist shot toward goal that was deflected by Jack Cronin. The rebound kicked out to Matthew Thom for a second chance, which was also stopped by Gorman was on the doorstep to swat home the third offering and knot the game at 2-2.
In overtime, Forget was called on to make four saves, while Princeton sent two shots – including a point blank attempt from Spencer Kersten – towards goal.
In the shootout, Colgate scored on its first and third attempts, while the Tigers were denied on both chances taken.
The game goes into the record book officially as a tie, giving Princeton four total points gained this weekend after a thrilling 5-4 win at No. 8 Cornell to open the weekend.
Luke Keenan picked up his first goal of the season with 8:03 left in the first, tying the game at 1-1. The goal was all Keenan, as he stripped a Colgate defender of the puck along the wall and then took two strides towards goal before firing high over Andrew Farrier's blocker just one second after the Raiders had killed a Princeton power play.
Keenan's goal answered a Pierson Brandon goal 2:48 into the game. The Raiders got on the board as Brandon turned on a loose puck and sent it through a screen and by Forget to stake Colgate to an early lead.
Arnaud Vachon regained the lead for Colgate with 8:41 left in the second period. A stretch pass was redirected by Ross Mitton at the Princeton blue line, sending Vachon in alone and he made good on his breakaway for a 2-1 Raiders lead.
The Tigers return to Hobey Baker Rink for the first time since November 27 next week, taking on No. 1 Quinnipiac on January 26 at 7 p.m.
