January 28, 2022 | Women's Basketball
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Abby Meyers and Julia Cunningham combined for 41 points as the Princeton Tigers rallied for a 61-49 victory over the Yale Bulldogs at the Lee Amphitheater on Friday evening.
Â
Meyers dropped in 22 points, adding six rebounds and three steals. Cunningham secured her second career double-double with 19 points and a career-high 11 caroms. Ellie Mitchell added 10 boards, four steals and three helpers in in the win.
Â
The Tigers found themselves trailing, 40-36, with 8:44 remaining in the game. Following a Cunningham layup, a trey by Meyers put Princeton back in front. Now ahead by three, Grace Stone knocked down a mid-range bucket before this impressive Meyers' long distance basket put the Tigers ahead, 50-42 …
Yale hit a three-pointer on the next possession, but the Tigers scored on their next two trips down the floor to seal their 32nd consecutive Ivy League victory. That mark is the second longest streak in the country behind UConn's 49.
Â
Princeton registered eight of the first 11 points of the contest, but Yale closed the gap and trailed, 13-11, as the first stanza wrapped up.
Â
The Bulldogs used a 10-2 run over the final four minutes of the second quarter to hold a 27-24 lead at halftime. Meyers registered 15 points in the first two frames. Â
Â
The third quarter was a close affair with neither team leading by more than three points. After a three-pointer from Cunningham put the road unit up, 36-33, Yale's Jenna Clark responded with a long-range bucket to set the score at 36-all as the final 10 minutes began.
Â
Princeton is now 14-4 overall and 6-0 in the Ivy League while Yale is now 12-5 this season and 5-2 in the conference. The Tigers welcome Cornell (Feb. 4) and Columbia (Feb. 5) to Jadwin next weekend.
