Men’s Tennis Closes Out ITA Kick-Off With 4-2 Win Over UNCW
January 30, 2022 | Men's Tennis
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Princeton University men's tennis team closed out the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Kick-Off Weekend with a 4-2 victory over the University of North Carolina, Wilmington, Sunday afternoon at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex.
"We expected a tough battle from UNC Wilmington," said Head Coach Billy Pate. "They have a strong program and talented team. This match had just about everything and they really pushed us till the end. I'm very excited for Filippos, as a first year, to have that opportunity in a pressure-packed moment. He didn't convert on a match point in the second set but was able to rally in the third and play determined tennis when it mattered.
We'll look to build on this and get ready for a tough road trip next weekend to Northwestern and Indiana."
The Tigers first won the doubles point, with the team of Karl Poling and Damian Rodriguez overcoming Gabe Hurtado and Bekhzod Rasamatov, 6-4, at the No. 1 spot. At No. 2, Will Peters and Ryan Seggerman took down Dillon Gooch and Trey Mallory, 6-2.
In singles, Seggerman earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 1 over Davide Innocenti, and Peters defeated Hurtado at No. 4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-1. Filippos Astreinidis also added a 6-3, 6-7 (2-7), 7-5 triumph over Mallory at No. 6
