Men's Ice Hockey Edged By No. 13 Harvard
October 29, 2022 | Men's Ice Hockey
In its first game of the 2022-23 season, Princeton went stride-for-stride with No. 13 Harvard before ultimately dropping a 4-2 decision at Bright-Landry.
Â
The Tigers trailed, 1-0, after one period but had clawed back to take a 2-1 lead early in the third before the Crimson countered with two goals in 3:24 to regain a lead they would not relinquish.
Â
Brendan Gorman (first career goal) and Jack Cronin had the Princeton goals. Aidan Porter had 28 saves in goal.
The Crimson opened the scoring with 6:01 left in the first period, converting on a power play. Zakary Karpa took advantage of a fluke play when a Harvard defender had his stick break during a shot towards goal. The puck fluttered away from where the defense and goalie were marking, and Karpa tapped home the first goal of the game.
Â
The Tigers were quickly back to the penalty kill after Liam Gorman was whistled for a five-minute major for boarding with 4:57 left in the opening period. The Tigers stood tall on the PK, allowing just two shots on goal and managing a pair of rushes of their own during the kill.
Â
Brendan Gorman got the Tigers on the board early in the second period. After he and Jayden Sison worked to force a Harvard turnover at the Princeton blueline, Gorman carried through the neutral zone before uncorking a low wrister through a Crimson player's legs, off the left post and in for his first collegiate goal – a snipe made more special by the fact the first player he celebrated with was his older brother, Liam, who had joined the rush with him.
Â
Jack Cronin gave Princeton a 2-1 lead with a power-play goal 1:53 into the third period. A cross-ice feed from Adam Robbins found Cronin at the top of the faceoff circle, and he fired high-blocker by Derek Mullahy.
Harvard answered with a PPG of its own at the 5:10 mark of the third period off the stick of Joe Miller. The Crimson would take a 3-2 lead 3:24 later after a Princeton defender slipped and fell during a clearing attempt and the puck found Matthew Coronato in front for a Harvard lead.
