Mitchell Grabs 23 Rebounds As Women's Basketball Drops Seton Hall, 62-58
November 14, 2022 | Women's Basketball
SOUTH ORANGE – Ellie Mitchell set a new career high with 23 rebounds as the Princeton Tigers took down the Seton Hall Pirates, 62-58, at Walsh Gymnasium on Monday night.
Â
Mitchell's 23 rebounds are only the fifth time a Princeton player has grabbed 20 in a game. The others include Margaret Meier who snagged 30 and 24 twice while Ellen Devoe contributed 23 in 1985.
Â
The junior has corralled at least 10 caroms in 12 of her 13 games.
Â
She had 15 in the second half alone.
Â
After Mitchell knocked down the first bucket of the game, Seton Hall registered eight straight points.
Â
The Tigers rebounded (literally and figuratively), hitting treys on three straight possessions to retake the lead, 11-8. After a three-point play by Seton Hall's Lauren Park-Lane tied the game, the two squads exchanged leads before the home team led 18-17 after 10 minutes.
Â
The Pirates opened the second quarter with a trey, but Princeton rallied and eventually tied the game after a basket from Julia Cunningham. The Tigers jumped in front on a bucket from Chet Nweke and eventually held a 29-28 advantage into halftime.
Â
Princeton began the second half with a 9-3 run, improving its advantage to seven, 38-31. Seton Hall got within a possession on several trips down the floor, but still trailed 44-40 with 10 minutes to go.
Â
The Tigers extended their advantage to eight with 6:26 remaining on the clock, but the home squad countered getting the game back to a three-point affair with 3:02 left.
Â
This clutch mid-range from Kaitlyn Chen kept Seton Hall at bay.
Â
Â
A three-pointer from Park-Lane closed the margin to two with 10 seconds to go, but four free throws from Cunningham and Maggie Connolly sealed the win for Princeton.
Â
Chen led the Tigers with 16 points and six helpers. Cunningham added 12 points while Mitchell was two points shy of a double-double while tying her career high with six swipes.
Â
Princeton has a quick turnaround with Fordham to coming to Jadwin on Wednesday. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
