Women's Volleyball Outlasts Brown in Five-Set Thriller

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton University women's volleyball team opened its final home weekend of the regular season on a high note Friday night inside Dillon Gymnasium, outlasting Brown in a five-set thriller, 3-2 (19-25, 25-22, 25-15, 21-25, 18-16.)
The Tigers earned the season sweep of the Bears, and were led by freshman Lucia Scalamandre who had a match and team-high 17 kills, along with a match-high six blocks. Senior Lindsey Kelly had a match-high 57 assists, along with a team-high 15 digs. Junior Maya Satchell's two service aces also tied the match-high.
The Tigers took an early 4-2 lead in the first set, but the Bears jumped ahead, 7-4, after a 5-0 run. Princeton responded with a 4-0 run, re-taking the lead 9-8. The set would then descend into a back-and-forth battle, with Brown taking a 16-13 lead prior to a Princeton timeout. While the Tigers attempted to battle back, the Bears held on for the 25-19 opening set victory.
A 5-0 run, featuring three-consecutive kills by Scalamandre, saw Princeton take a 14-9 lead in the second set. Scalamandre's fourth kill of the set gave the Tigers a 16-11 lead, then a senior Elena Montgomery kill kept Princeton up five, at 19-14. Brown narrowed the deficit to two at 23-21, but the Tigers would prevail in the second set, 25-22, after a senior Avery Luoma kill and even it up at 1-1.
The Tigers and Bears traded points to begin the third set, until a kill by Montgomery ignited a 6-0 run, including three-straight sophomore Mariah Haislip kills, that gave Princeton a 15-10 advantage. Another Haislip kill extended the Tigers' lead to six at 17-11, then a 3-0 run saw Princeton extend its lead to 21-12 after a senior Melina Mahood kill. Princeton didn't look back from there, taking the third set 25-15 after a double block by Montgomery and Scalamandre.
A 6-0 run by the Bears in the fourth set saw Brown take an 11-8 lead, then a 4-0 run gave the Bears a six-point lead at 16-10. The Tigers narrowed the deficit to three at 18-15, with help from a 4-0 run. Led off by a Montgomery kill, Princeton used a 3-0 to pull within two at 21-19, but Brown went on to tie it up at 2-2 with a 25-21 fourth set victory.

Another 3-0 run saw the Tigers extend their lead to 10-8, following a Scalamandre kill. The Bears would soon go on a 5-0 run, taking match point at 15-14, but a kill by Luoma tied it up at 15-15. Princeton closed the match out on a 3-0 run, prevailing 18-16 in the fifth set after a Mahood kill, and 3-2 in the match.

The Tigers return to Dillon Gymnasium at 5:00 p.m. tomorrow night to take on Yale (19-1, 11-0). Prior to first serve, a ceremony will be held honoring the Tigers' Class of 2023.
