Women's Volleyball Downs Yale 3-1 on Senior Night

PRINCETON, N.J. – In a battle of the top two teams in the Ivy League and on senior night, the Princeton University women's volleyball team fed off an electric home crowd and overcame Yale, 3-1 (25-20, 25-20, 21-25, 25-21), Saturday inside Dillon Gymnasium.
Prior to first serve a ceremony was held honoring the Tigers' Class of 2023; Cameron Dames, Elena Montgomery, Avery Luoma, Melina Mahood, Olivia Schewe and Lindsey Kelly.
The Tigers were again led by freshman Lucia Scalamandre, who hit .407 and had a team-high 14 kills, along with a career-best nine blocks. Kelly's 45 assists were a team-high, as were Luoma's 13 digs. Dames, junior Maya Satchell and freshman Ella Bunde tied for the team-high in service aces, with two.
While Yale took a 6-4 lead in the first set, the Tigers used a pair of 3-0 runs to surge ahead, 10-7. With the Tigers up 10-8, a kill by Scalamandre sparked a 4-0 run that saw Princeton extend its lead to five, at 13-8. The Bulldogs battled back and trimmed the lead to two at 18-16, but a kill by sophomore Mariah Haislip led off a 3-0 run that gave the Tigers a 21-16 advantage. Scalamandre put down the kill on set point, as the Tigers went up 1-0 in the match with a 25-20 first set victory.
The second set began as a back-and-forth battle; with the Tigers up 8-7, Yale went on a 4-0 run to take an 11-8 lead. Princeton bounced back, tying it up at 13-13 following a kill by Luoma, then with the score tied at 16-16, a 5-0 run saw Princeton take an 20-16 lead after a Satchell service ace. From there, Princeton held on to prevail in the set, 25-20, and go up 2-0 over the Bulldogs.
Yale raced out to a 9-7 lead in the third set, then used a 4-0 run to take a 15-8 lead. With the Bulldogs up 19-11, a kill by Haislip led off a 3-0 run that saw Princeton narrow the deficit to five at 19-14. A service ace by Kelly trimmed the lead to three, 21-18, but Yale would go to win the set, 25-21.
With the Bulldogs up 6-5 in the fourth set, a Montgomery kill ignited a 3-0 run that saw Princeton take an 8-6 lead. Shortly after, with the score tied 9-9, a 5-0 run saw the Tigers take a 13-9 lead after a kill by Scalamandre. Princeton then extended its lead to six, 16-10, after another 3-0 run. The Bulldogs used a 4-0 run to make it a 16-14 set, but another kill by Scalamandre extended the Tigers' lead to four, 19-15. Ignited by a Scalamandre kill, Princeton closed the set out on a 3-0 run, winning the set 25-21, and the match 3-0.
