February 21, 2022 | Men's Golf
Princeton freshman William Huang turned in a 1-under 71 on Monday to open The Prestige on the Greg Norman Course at PGA West in La Quinta, Calif., helping Princeton to stand tied for ninth overall in a strong field at the three-day event.
Huang had three birdies over his first seven holes to start Monday's round on the way to the under-par finish, adding another birdie on the par-three fourth hole to drop to -1.
Huang stands tied for third as one of eight players in the field to post a red number, and Huang and five others are just one shot off medalist pace. Colorado State's Davis Bryant and Vanderbilt's Reid Davenport are both at -2 entering Tuesday's round.
Senior Guy Waterhouse is also in the top 10, tied for ninth after an even-par first round that saw him turn in five birdies over the first eight holes.
No. 18 Vanderbilt and No. 48 Oregon co-lead the team standings at +3, one stroke in front of No. 25 LSU. The field includes 11 teams in the Golfstat top 50, and Princeton is in front of seven of those teams entering Tuesday's round, standing at +12.
Along with the five Tigers playing at PGA West, two are competing as individuals at the nearby Coral Mountain Golf Club at The Prestige's individual event. Sophomore Jackson Fretty is seventh among the 62 individuals after carding a first-round 2-under 70.
