Princeton head coach Matt Madalon likes to start his seasons with games on Saturday and then Tuesday, which is how the 2022 season is starting off for his Tigers. After a 22-6 opening day win over Monmouth Saturday, Princeton is back on Sherrerd Field Tuesday evening for a game against Binghamton.
After that game? Well, the other part of Madalon's scheduling strategy kicks off Saturday.
Princeton vs. Binghamton
Five Storylines
Strength of Schedule
Princeton's game against Binghamton is followed by five straight Saturdays of games against teams ranked in this week's media Top 10, or top 11 in the coaches' poll. That gauntlet starts Satudray at Maryland, who is No. 1 in both polls.
After that, it's a return to the D.C. area to take on No. 3 Georgetown and then a home game against Rutgers, who is No. 5 in the media poll and No. 6 in the coaches' poll. Then it's home against Penn, No. 10 by the media and No. 11 by the coaches, and a trip to Yale (the opposite of Rutgers).
Princeton, for its part, is ranked 18th by the coaches and 20th by the media.
Seven for 22
Princeton scored 22 goals against Monmouth in the opener. Those 22 goals came from seven total players, all of whom scored at least twice. Christian Ronda and Alex Slusher, who between them had seven career goals (all by Slusher) prior to this season, combined for 10, with five each.
Chris Brown had three goals and four assists against the Hawks, running his streak of consecutive games with at least one goal to 33, the longest active streak in Division I. Brown, who has scored at least one goal in every game of his career, has the second-longest streak in Princeton history, trailing only Chris Massey (46 straight games from 1995-98).
The other Princeton goals came from Jake Stevens (three), Alexander Vardaro (two), Coulter Mackesy (two) and Tommy Barnds (two).
Face it
Tyler Sandoval has taken exactly 100 career face-offs and has won 55 of them. The last Princeton player to win at least 55 percent of his career face-offs was James Mitchell, who won 56.6 percent (477 for 843) from 1994-97.
Series history
Princeton and Binghamton have played only once before, back in 2006, a game the Tigers won 10-2. Scott Sowanick was the Tigers' leading scorer in that one, with three goals and two assists.
The current Bearcats are 0-1, having lost their opener to Marist 11-9 on Feb. 12. Binghamton's game against St. Bonaventure scheduled for this past Saturday was postponed due to icy field conditions.
Caused turnovers
Princeton had 15 caused turnovers against Monmouth Saturday. It tied the record for most caused turnovers in a game since the stat was first kept in 2007.
It was also the seventh time Princeton has had 15 caused turnovers in a game and the first since doing so against both Brown and Johns Hopkins in 2019.
