History Made! Princeton Advances Two to NCAA Finals for First Time Ever
March 18, 2022 | Wrestling
Friday night at the NCAA wrestling championships saw Princeton overcome a drought that was long, and then another that was infinite.
About an hour after junior 125-pounder Patrick Glory became the first NCAA finalist from Princeton in 20 years, junior 157-pounder Quincy Monday won to make it the first time in program history that Princeton would have two finalists at the same NCAA Championships.
Saturday's championship session at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Mich., will start at 7 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN and streamed on ESPN+.
Third-seeded Glory gave Princeton its first finalist in 20 years, since Greg Parker '03 made the final at 174 in 2002, with a 13-5 win over second-seeded Vito Arujau of Cornell just two weeks after Arujau was a 19-6 winner over Glory in the EIWA final. The win tilted the collegiate record between the two to Glory, 3-2, as well as the season record, 2-1, along with Glory's win in the dual match in February.
Arujau took the lead with a takedown midway through the first period, but Glory got a point back with an escape that followed. The second period saw Glory get a takedown 23 seconds in and then four near-fall points less than a minute later to take a 7-2 lead, though an Arujau reversal and a penalty point brought the margin down to two at 7-5 entering the third. The third period was all Glory's, with an escape off the start and punctuated with a takedown and a two-point near-fall in the final minute, along with the riding-time point.
Glory will face top-seeded Nick Suriano of Michigan in Saturday's final in what will be their first collegiate meeting.
Fifth-seeded Monday was a 3-2 winner over eighth-seeded Will Lewan, facing an opponent he had met twice before and defeated both times, including once earlier this season in the quarterfinals of the Cliff Keen Invitational. Monday got a takedown just 14 seconds into the match, and though Lewan earned an escape point out of that, Monday was able to get that point back with an escape off the second-period start. Lewan had an escape off the third-period start to pull back within one at 3-2, but Monday allowed nothing further and earned his trip to the final.
Monday will face Northwestern's second-seeded Ryan Deakin. The two have met twice before, both Deakin wins, 5-2 in the quarterfinals of the 2018 Midlands tournament and earlier this season in the Cliff Keen final, 8-3.
