Tigers Score Early, Beat Villanova
March 23, 2022 | Softball
A five-run second inning was key in helping the Princeton softball team to a 6-5 win over Villlanova on Wednesday at Princeton Softball Stadium at Strubing Field with 10 Tigers contributed to the team's 14 hits.
Lauren Sablone led Princeton at the plate, going 3 for 3, while Adrienne Chang and Serena Starks each had two hits and Chang drove in a pair of runs.
The big second inning opened the scoring and saw Princeton send 10 batters to the plate. Ali Blanchard led off with a triple before Sablone followed with a run-scoring single, and three batters later, Starks had a hit that drove in one run with another coming in when the throw at home got away. Chang followed with a two-run single for the 5-0 lead.
In the third inning, Sablone led off with a single and came home two batters later on a ground ball by Cate Bade.
Molly Chambers started the game and allowed just a hit and a walk over the first three innings before Villanova used a leadoff walk, a Tess Cites double and a Ryan Henry groundout to get on the board. In the fifth, two walks and two hits helped the Wildcats pull within 6-3, with Megan Kern getting an RBI double and another coming home on a wild pitch. In the sixth, Villanova cut the deficit to one run on two walks and two hits, with Kern getting another RBI after a run came home on a wild pitch.
With the tying and go-ahead runs on and two out in the sixth, Chambers, who left the circle during the fifth inning, re-entered and got a groundout to end the threat before tossing a hitless, shutout seventh to secure the win.
Princeton will return to Ivy League play this weekend at Harvard.
