Yale Beats Baseball in High-Scoring Series Finale
March 27, 2022 | Baseball
Princeton, N.J. — Princeton was defeated by Yale on a cold, windy day in New Jersey, 13-6.
The Tigers, who are not short of fight and persistence, have developed a knack for scoring in the late stages of games this season. Through 18 games, they have scored 26 runs in the ninth inning—the most runs by inning for the team this season. Fourty-one of Princeton's 104 runs this season have come in the final two frames.
Matt Scannell had another solid day at the plate. He went 3-for-4 with an RBI. In his first weekend of Ivy League ball, Scannell posted a .545 batting average with six hits and a home run, four RBI, and a run scored.
Eric Marasheski also had a good day with the bat in his hands. In his sixth start of the season, he went 2-for-4 with his first homer of the season. Brendan Cumming went 2-for-5 with a home run and two runs scored to improve to a .390 batting average this season. Nadir Lewis improved his team-leading batting average to .422 after going 4-for-10 with four RBI and three runs scored. Lewis also leads the team with 22 RBI.
Yale hitters took advantage of 15mph gusts as a pair of right-handed hitters pulled hits into the wind and over the left field wall to take a 3-0 lead after two innings.
Princeton pulled one back in the bottom of the second. With Tigers on the corners, Carlos Abello hit into a fielder's choice which allowed Emus to score.
The Bulldogs ripped open a big lead in the third stanza as a bases-loaded walk and a grand slam extended the visitors' lead to 8-1. They added another with a solo homer in the top of the sixth.
The Tigers cut into the deficit in the bottom of the frame as Lewis and Scannell each drove in a run to make it a 9-3 game. Yale punched right back with its second grand slam of the day to take a 13-3 lead through seven frames.
Princeton did what it has done all season with a late, ninth-inning rally. Marasheski, Nick DiPietrantonio, and Cumming hit back-to-back-to-back two-out home runs, but ultimately lost 13-6.
The Tigers return to action with its first conference road series of the season. They head to the Big Apple for a three-game set against Columbia with the first game of the series-opening doubleheader scheduled for Saturday, April 2 at 11:30 a.m.
