March 04, 2022 | Men's Ice Hockey
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – A pair of third-period goals broke what was a 1-1 tie in Union's favor as the Dutchmen claimed Game One of the ECAC Playoffs, 3-2.
Gabriel Seger converted on a Union power play, finding a loose puck in a scramble and roofing it over a sprawling Jeremie Forget with 9:28 left in the third period.
The Dutchmen added some insurance with 2:34 remaining and the teams playing 4-on-4. Brandon Estes went to the net collecting a rebound after Forget made an initial save to give Union a 3-1 lead.
Noah de la Durantaye gave Princeton some life with 1:15 left, snapping home a long-distance shot with the Tigers' net empty to cut the deficit to one. The Tigers had one last attempt to tie the game in the final 0:30, but de la Durantaye's shot just before the buzzer sailed wide.
Jeremie Forget finished with 34 saves, making 27 over the first two periods.
Union got on the board early, scoring 2:22 in. Matt Allen broke in on a 2-on-1, and he called his own number and finished a snap shot inside the near post to give the Dutchmen a 1-0 lead.
Liam Gorman tied the game just past the midway mark of the second period, quickly going under the crossbar off a Christian O'Neill pass from behind the net. Jack Cronin also factored in on the goal with the original shot that was saved by Connor Murphy as the Tigers dialed up pressure off the rush.
Gorman's goal was part of a second-period push from the Tigers which saw Princeton send 12 total shots on goal. In addition to Gorman's goal, the best two chances came on breakaways from Matthew Thom and Ian Murphy which were denied.
Game Two between the two teams is set for March 5 at 4 p.m. at Messa Rink.
