In recognition of a season that saw him close with three consecutive top-10 tournament finishes and two tournament titles among them, Princeton freshman William Huang has been named the Ivy League Rookie of the Year, leading Princeton's three All-Ivy League honorees announced on Tuesday.
Huang is Princeton's second consecutive Ivy Rookie of the Year, as Max Ting, who joined Huang as a second-team All-ivy League honoree this season, was the winner in 2019, when the award was last given. Since the inaugural award in 2009, Princeton has now won three Rookie of the Year awards with Quinn Prchal '17 as the first, in 2013.
Huang had a stroke average of 72.47 across five events between the fall and the spring, with all four of his sub-70 rounds coming during his two spring-season tournament titles. Huang shared medalist honors at the Ross Collegiate, setting his collegiate-best round with a 67, and on his home course at the Princeton Invitational, shot a 67, 68 and 68 to win the tournament title. Huang tied for ninth, with Ting, at the Ivy League Championships, earning second-team All-Ivy status.
Ting closed the spring season with two of his three top-10 tournament finishes over the course of the year, finishing tied for eighth at the Princeton Invitational before tying for ninth at the Ivy tournament, finishing his junior season with a stroke average of 75.67. It is the second time in as many opportunities that Ting has earned second-team All-Ivy status, first doing so in 2019 before honors were not awarded in his sophomore season of 2020 with most of that spring canceled due to the pandemic.
Jake Mayer, a senior economics major, earns the program's place on the Academic All-Ivy League team. Mayer competed in six events throughout the fall and spring seasons, carrying a stroke average of 75.92.
