PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 44 Princeton University women's tennis team will open play at the 2022 NCAA Tournament against the United States Military Academy in the first round, at the Virginia Tennis Complex at the Boar's Head Sports Club.
Should the Tigers defeat the Black Knights, they would take on the winner of the No. 5 University of Virginia, and Youngstown State University on Sunday, May 8, at 2 p.m.
Princeton the NCAA Tournament
Along with winning the Ivy League Championship for the third-straight season, the Tigers will be making their third-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, and sixth under Head Coach Laura Granville. The Tigers qualification for the 2022 NCAA Tournament is their 10th in school history.
Princeton last played in the NCAA Tournament in 2019, overcoming No. 27 Northwestern University, 4-1, in Seattle Washington, in the first round. In the second round, Princeton fell to the No. 10 University of Washington.
Last Time Out
For the third consecutive season and the 16th time in program history, the No. 49 Princeton University women's tennis team are Ivy League Champions after defeating No. 56 Columbia University, 4-0, Sunday afternoon at the Lenz Tennis Center.
Finishing with a 6-1 record in Ivy play, the Ivy title was Head Coach Laura Granville's sixth, as she also guided the Tigers to a three-peat from 2014-2016.
The Tigers got off to a strong start, winning the doubles point. The team of Grace Joyce and Maia Sung overcame Akanksha Bhan and Anna Zhan at No. 1, 6-2, and Neha Velaga and Skyler Grishuk downed Jennifer Kerr and Shivani Amineni, 6-4, at No. 2
In singles, Velaga earned a 6-4, 6-2, triumph at No. 2 over Zhang, No. 47 Victoria Hu dispatched Kerr 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3, and No. 78 Shvets upended Sakar at No. 4, 6-2, 7-5.
All-Ivy Honors
The Tigers garnered a pair of major awards as Head Coach Laura Granville was named Coach of the Year for the fifth time, and sophomore Neha Velaga was named Rookie of the Year.
Additionally, five Tigers received All-Ivy League honors; Velaga and junior Daria Frayman were named to the First Team, freshman Victoria Hu to the Second, along with junior Grace Joyce and sophomore Maia Sung, who were named to the Second Team in doubles.
Tigers in the Rankings
Along with sitting at No. 44 in the team rankings, Frayman is ranked No. 4 in singles, Hu No. 54, and senior Brianna Shvets No. 77.
Scouting Army
The Black Knights are 25-9 on the season, and went 5-2 in Patriot League play. Army defeated Boston University, 4-1, on Sunday, April, in the Patriot League Championship match to automatically qualify for the NCAA Tournament. Army will be making its 16th appearance in the NCAA Tournament, and its first since 2019.
The Tigers will be taking on the Black Knights for the first time in program history.
